Zhenya Smirnov obtained a specialist's degree (equivalent to M.Sc.) in mathematics at Saint Petersburg State University in 2011. Being interested in endurance sports and biomechanics, Zhenya got swim and triathlon coach certificates and completed an internship in Prague. After a few years of working as a coach and later moving to Germany, Zhenya earned a bachelor's degree in movement science at the University of Stuttgart in 2021 and, currently, is a research fellow and a PhD student at the Department of Training and Movement Sciences (Muscle-Tendon Interaction group).

Zhenya's scientific interests lie in the area of neuromechanics, particularly in myotendinous biomechanics and the mechanisms of energy conversion and energy flow in terrestrial locomotion, the synergistic and hierarchical organisation of motor control, biological autonomy, the modularity of the nervous system, and spinal and proprioceptive control of posture and locomotion.
