Vita

Sebastian Braun has been a professor at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Head of the Department of Sport Sociology since 2009.

He was a professor at the University of Paderborn from 2003 to 2009. Prior to this professorship, he was a research fellow in the Emmy Noether Program of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris as well as the University of Potsdam, where he held the position of junior team leader (2000 – 2003).

He previously worked as a Research Associate in the Commission of Inquiry on the “Future of Civic Engagement” in the German Bundestag in Berlin and at the University of Potsdam.

Sebastian Braun requiers a habilitation at the University of Potsdam in 2004. In 1999 the Free University of Berlin and the University of Nantes jointly awarded him the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Docteur en sociologie respectively under a “convention de co-tutelle de thèse”. He holds a university degree (Diplom) in Political Science and a university degree (Magister Artium) in Sports Science and Education (both Free University of Berlin), as well as a Diplôme d`Études Approfondies en Sciences Sociales (DEA, University of Nantes).

Sebastian Braun's current research priorities and publications focus on social-science analyses of sport, civic engagement and civil society, clubs and federations, integration, migration and social capital, as well as corporate citizenship and CSR. In 2001 he was presented with the “Otto Wolff von Amerongen Preis für Sportwissenschaft”, an academic award in the field of sport science.

Sebastian Braun is involved in a large number of academic research associations and centers as well as commissions, expert committees, advisory panels, boards of trustees and juries. He also serves as an expert for specialist magazines and research-funding institutions.

In his free time Sebastian Braun is a keen athlete. His sporting activities culminated in winning the U 17 German soccer championship (1988) and second place in the U 19 German soccer championship (1990) with his team Hertha 03 Zehlendorf. Today his main sporting activity is running.
