Sport–Movement–Engagement

The Department of Sport Sociology, headed by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Braun, examines the interrelations between individual actions and societal structures in sport. The department's activities are guided by research, teaching, consultancy and the wish to provide impetus for the public discourse.

Against a conceptual background of civil society, participation and civic engagement the department addresses five areas: Volunteering and Sport - Sports Clubs and Federations - Integration, Migration and Sport - Social Capital and Sport - CSR and Sport.

The department engages in theory-driven empirical research and application-focused evaluation studies based on quantitative and qualitative methods of empirical social research.

In teaching, the department offers foundation (level 01) and advanced seminars in the Institute's bachelor's and master's degree programs. In addition, the department teaches in the field of didactics and methodology of sports (DMS).
