Voluntary engagement is an important resource in sport. A wide range of voluntary activities is open to the individual beyond gainful activity or private affairs. Volunteering in clubs and federations as well as forms of participation in projects and social movements are good examples of engagement at the individual level in the field of sport.

Against this backdrop, the Department of Sport Sociology does research and provides advice on structures, actors and dynamics of voluntary engagement in sport.
